Road safety decade campaign to be launched

11.05.2011.

By the UN General Secretary resolution, the period between 2011 and 2020 has been proclaimed as a Decade of Road Safety.

It has been planed that the official date to launch this campaign is 11th of May. General conference will be held in Geneva and this date will be officially promoted as a beginning of joint activities of UN member states to reduce the number of casualties in road accidents.

Today in a great number of countries, numerous events will be held on which the importance of road safety will be presented. Decade of Road Safety will also be officially launched.

The official launch of this campaign in Serbia will take place on Republika Square in Belgrade. Agency for road safety and other relevant state and social bodies will be involved. The kick off runs until 17.00 hours and all the participants will present suitable content related to road safety.

JKP ‘Parking Servis' has yet again responded to the Agency for road safety appeal and made a modest contribution by promoting its educational campaign ‘Pupils ask you - slow down by the school', which has already shown impressive results in reducing a number of road deaths in school zones.

World Health Organization data show that every year 1.3 million people are killed in traffic accidents while between 20 and 50 million people get injured. The Commission for Global Road Safety has initiated this campaign because of the latest trends which show that the number of casualties is on the increase.

Statistics show that in our country around 60 000 traffic accidents take place every year in which 800 people are killed with the largest percentage of killed falling into an age category between 18 and 25 and that the entire class of pupils disappears.

By adopting a new Law on Road Safety the number of traffic accidents has been dramatically reduced and as a result Serbia has left the zone of high risk in comparison with other European countries. Within the event a performance ‘180 Saved Lives' will be shown and it should symbolically point to the positive results of the new ‘Law on Road Safety'.
